Makes me crazy when I itch. Happens up in my shoulders and around my ankles. Sometimes on my hands. I assume it from nerves, but it is usually in the same spots. Does this happen to anyone else?

when my lower back nerves pinch more than normal it make the bottem of my feet itch so bad, I take off my shoes & socks, then twist on them on the driveway. The itching feels like it's an inch up into my feet. Also narcotic meds do it~it's not a problem unless you get red or pinks blotches on your skin and/or shallower breathing. So kinda watch for these symtoms and if it stays as just an itch, scratch it…lol…donnie

That's funny, I thought I was the only one that danced on the sidewalk! Mine is a reaction to morphine. Now I'm off MS!

I took "Opana ER" 80mg x2 per day~time released morphine. didn't make me itch but they were $699 for 60 pills, $60 w/ insurance & in my drinking days I'd dance anywhere but it hurts too bad now…

at 42, I got married(1st) & got stopped on way to brothers'(15 minutes before ceromony), cop looks in the back seat & sees 1/2 bottle Stoley's Vodka and asked where I was going in a Tux & if I'd been drinking. I said, "Yes Sir, I going to get married & I've drunk". Long story short, he said if I could drive ok for 1/2 mile where I was getting off highway, he'd let me go. I guess I drove good enough. I drank & cooked all day, then went to a hotel & got dressed. I was such an ass at my wedding that when preacher ssaid, "Say this after me", I said , "I Bonald, not Donald & it's all on tape! I watched first 3 minutes of tape, never saw the rest it only got worse…so I quit drinking in 2001 and have had maybe 8 beers total since…

Yeah, the bottoms of my feet get it sometimes, too! But I don't do the driveway. Ha Ha. I do this rough rug I have. Too funny. Doesn't it just drive you nuts when you're somewhere, in public or something, with a tied shoe or something? And it's just too tacky to take your shoe off and have at it? I think it has a lot to do with which nerves are being pinched. They left me alone in the docs' office and I will read anything in sight. They have some of the coolest charts in there pertaining to the discs and where they head off to and end up at. I look allover online but never find any quite as good. When I finally got to see some good charts it explained a lot to me. Especially since they were directly related to the disc in question. One question I always had was why I would get this wicked pain on the side of my right toe. Out of nowhere, there and gone, enough to make me let out a yelling OW! When I was following the nerve 'trails' from the spine, I found it came from one of my pinched nerves. Of course now I can't remember but I think it stemmed from S1, one of my problem discs (Now that's the opiates talking, lack of memory. But then again I like to blame those instead of old age.) Many responses I got when I first inquired about the itching were blaming it on the meds. I know the difference between the med itch and something altogether different. Deeper somehow…
Unfortunately, you can't always get answers to some of these simple ?'s. Between my PT (man, she's smart!) and constant reading I've found some answers to many things. It doesn't make it any different but at least you know why it's happening. Inquiring minds, you know… Thanks for responding. I really got a kick out of the driveway thing!

mans' gotta do …you know the rest of the saying but yes, I've had a software program that told me where every nerve went and what it's function was including the symptoms when damaged. I lost it…lol…15 years ago but now adays it's all at our finger tips . Your toe sounds like "Gout" to me. We can talk anytime your meds let you remember me..lol..ok? anytime~if I don't know I can find out or I'll sat I don't have a clue. Good chatting, see you around here. My meds kicking in now!

Not gout. Due to sciatic nerve…

  • digginya
    digginya March 5 at 9:43

The only reason I say that is two reasons, one is I know people w/gout and it's the big toe that gets it worst on them and 2nd, I've got 4 (L1-4) that are sqished down w/a couple bulging that feels like a hot nail getting stabed in right buttock and pain down the (R) leg, ankles hurt and heels itch BADLY, but it seems to stop at my heals. That was my reasoning. The nerve that causes mine must be slightly less damaged than yours.

Hi Dear1, severe itching that doesn't go away should be checked out by your Doc. Sorry, I didn't see this until today. I have heard that using "epsom
salt" in the bath might help this itching. I have used a product that has
amazing results, even with the first use, it is called "dermarest" medicated
moisturizer. I swear by this product! Try looking for it at Walmart & drug
stores. I hope it helps you as much as it did me. Hugs, marieanne

Thanks. I spoke to another Doc of mine, the one that does my injections, and he also said that because of the particular area it's in, it is caused by my nerve impingement, both in my neck and sciatic. He says especially just before it get really severe, when it's just starting out. The aeas that I itch at are in spots where the pain manifests itself. He said it's like your nerve endings start freaking out and jumping around making it feel kind of creepy crawly. Yes, he said it like that! He's rather young (and cute). He said one of my NSAID's should take care of some of the inflammation as well as help to deter the more severe symptoms that follow.
But thank you for the name of the lotion. I'll definitely check it out.

Morn Girl, about your husband, I am one of them too, and I can relate to what he is feeling. You see my Bride was DX'd at Christmas time with a life ending, progressive illness. I AM SCARED TO DEATH. I am dying from three health concerns. I am in pain 24/7 and I am NOT even a little scared about future, or lack thereof. Overnight my focus became 100% her. I catch myself dewelling on my impending death, and I recognize it for what it is!!!!!!. That's when I need a respite. When I can't stand the thought of losing her. That's kinda sick isn't it? I escape by focusing on my problems to try to get away from my fear for her. I've got to be super strong for my honey. I can't go first and leave her to deal with it alone. I am only kidding myself when I 'try to escape briefly' my focus must be on my love!

  • cavie2
    cavie2 February 15 at 6:18

Alec when you focus on your own problems you are creating negative energy and what goes around comes around so you create more. Think positive thoughts that create positive energy. "I am happy and greatful for my perfect health. I have total health and wholeness" say it as if you mean it As If you already have it. And believe it. ASK-BELIEVE-RECEIVE.

That my friend is charity. It is always better to think of someone else rather than yourself. Sometimes when you are hurting it is really difficult to do, but that is one of the best therapy that you can have for what is ailing you. I know that when I come home from work, whether it has been an easy day or a difficult one, I always try to find something I can do to help my sweetheart out even if it just setting the table for dinner. It gives me purpose and helps me not to dwell on my own problems.

  • digginya
    digginya March 5 at 11:02

some itching is an alert that you may be allergic to a medication. You should scratch…lol…but then watch you skin for red or pink blotches & make sure your breathing is normal. if not, get to the ER…

  • KXRAY
    KXRAY January 8 at 8:58

Yes,Dave.Actually, I think itching is just a side effect vs. allergy. If I use hydrocodone through my arthritis lotion, it does not bother me at all. When I take it orally, it can make me itch, too.I'd deal with it also, if it would tackle some of my pain!-Maybe percocet (oxycodone/tylenol) could be an alternative, but this too can cause itching. Some people just have less side effects from one drug than the other, it's an idividual thing.oxycodone is in oxycontin, also.Remember, tylenol can be deadly over 4,000mg/24 hr(I lost a 53 y/o pt. to tylenol!Less for a woman or small person.Be careful if you want to add an over the counter med to one you are already taking. That's what happened to my patient. That is the person I think of when I hear that someone is being told not to take pain meds(mother-in-law),will she turn to taking too much o tylenol?Does the sister-in-law think tylenol is safe in large quantities?JUST A THOUGHT!

  • Lori Byrnes
Lori Byrnes January 16 at 6:42

Sister-in-law is too stupid to know anything about it. People who think that every pain should be cured by tylenol or advil have obviously never experienced the kind of pain we have.

Thanks for the warning. I do know about the tylenol OD problem. I actually talked to my doc about it when I saw her the last time. I have tried Oxycontin and it doesn't work as well for me as hydrocordone.

  • Phonse65
    Phonse65 March 7 at 1:05

Dave I've been told that hydrocordone & oxycontin were the same. Source: my Pharm.

  • Vegas Dave
Vegas DavePA March 7 at 2:05

No kidding? I was told that they are similar but that they are built differently. They attack the pain differently. Maybe I am just remembering it incorrectly. I know that I took oxycontin once and it did nothing to help my pain, but hydrocordone as been working for the last 10 years.

  • KXRAY
    KXRAY January 10 at 9:01

I'm happy for you, because you can take a lighter drug that actually works for your pain!Yea~

  • Vegas Dave
Vegas DavePA January 17 at 1:06

Me too, but the reason that I brought it up was just to show that everyone is different and to my good fortune the lesser or lighter drug works for me. I am lucky that way. You just never know which is why your doctor has to be willing to try different things to see what will work and find the combination that is the least invasive and most cost effective.

I get mine on my upper back too. At first I thought it was the tags on my shirt, but it was too far to the left. Sometimes I scratch at it so much , it actually leaves marks. I don't even realize that I'm doing it.

Be careful!Scratching too hard can introduce nast y infections. My husband had a skin disease from being in the Navy working with Jet fuel and hydrolic fuel, and other caustic agents. His hands started w/hyperhydrosis(too much sweting) and progressed to sloughing-off of skin, any way it spread around his whole body, and he said he would scratch until it bled, because it itched so much..he ended-up in the hospital with an iv in both arms with a massive STAPH infection..He never got over it and within a month he was DEAD.@year anniversary of his death yesterday(1-8-10passed away). Please ask your doctor for help to relieve your problem with some meds, I don't want to lose anyone or hear of it—Just for a little while!wink-wink w/lots of hope.Last year I lost my `6 y/o cousin to a couple of murderers.A young boy and girl killed her.He pushed her and she hit her head on the back of a truck, she got up and he pushed her back down, she hit her head and began to seize, he panicked and hit her on the side of her neck with the side of a military shovel, then his girlfriend slit my cousin's throat.they buried her in a shallow grave near the border of Nevada and Utah. Her name was Mickey Castanzo, she was a beautiful girl with long brown hair and gorgeous french eyes. She made straight A's and was walking home from track practice when he followed her and then…I kind of feel like I'm whining after writing that to all of you .She never had a chance to 'burn the candles at both ends'or work really hard for other people or do something stupid to get hurt or just work her whole life and be hurt.If she could she'd trade places with any one of us.I feel bad, complaining.I've lost 2 people very close to me without being able to get over one death first before the other happened. The trial starts this month. Here we go again. It's so horrible, what they did..It's hard to believe it happened to our family.first she was missing for a couple of days and everyone thought 'will we ever find her, and what if we find her?Atleast it was a quick death. That's all I can get out of it for her.Makes you think, right?

I'm so sorry for the loss of your cousin! Such a brutal and senseless crime.
I understand somewhat how you are feeling. In the summer of 2007, I lost my older brother to murder. My brother was a kind, caring person and was the victim of a brutal murderer, someone that didn't even know him. He was just walking to the store and a man had been standing outside with a bat for over an hour and my brother happened to be the unlucky first person to walk past him and he brutally beat him in the head with the bat then ran.My brother had several operations on his brain but he died 4 days later. The crime was caught on the stores camera and was shown on the news and internet. It was very painful to watch but someone, after seeing the video, recognized the murderer, followed him to his home and called the police. It was a horrible ordeal and it took over 2 years to get to trial. It has been one of the most painful experiences in my life to deal with. Our family still doesn't know why this person committed this heinous crime and we'll never know. I felt like you, how could this have happened to him, but it makes no sense. You will be in my prayers. Although you never get over it, after a few years, you begin to just think about the good things and not the tragic way your loved one was taken.

    Moe

After 24 months of the suspect's lawyer asking for more exams to see if he was mentally fit to stand trial, he wound up pleading guilty to 2nd degree murder. He has to serve a minimum of 16 years. He never told us why he did it and because there wasn't a trail we were not allowed to confront him. My family did submit victim statements to the judge before sentencing. I don't think 16 years is long enough considering the brutality of the crime but that's what happened.

I don't know why I haven't seen this post. I think I've been too busy for awhile!
Good for my mind, but not so much my back. I'd rather be busy and hurt more than laying around bored and feeling a little better. I'm active by nature and inactivity makes me frustrated and depressed. When my back gets BAAAD, I get severe muscle spasms. There is no dressing myself if I have to bend at all, yet I can only lie in a very pronounced fetal position, and move as little as possible. I got 'stuck' in my friends' car seat after a doctor's appt. and when he tried to help me out I would have definitely punched him had I had freedom of movement.
OMG, I am rambling. Doc is trying me on Percocet this month and it makes me feel like I've had a major dose of caffeine without the shakes. So many people say opiates make them drowsy. I feel like I could clean the whole house. I asked her if it has the opposite effect on me or If I just feel better, although it only cut my back pain in half. ('S okay with me!). She said it was probably a little of both.
Anyway, back to the main subject… Even Nyquil fires me up. Cold medicines, cough syrups and Benadryl. Sudafed is a bad one for me. I can take 1/2 dose of Nyquil when I have a cold with no side effects, but it does reduce the stuffiness. It took me awhile to realize that if it has the warning that it may make children excitable, it would definitely do it to me. My whole scalp kind of tingles like I can almost feel my hair growing and I'm so high you could scrape me off the ceiling. Otherwise, I have a very high tolerance to most drugs. I had a horrible cold that hung on a long time ago, at least 30 years. I coughed incessantly. I could not sleep because of it. I was becoming delirious from lack of sleep and coughing so hard and often that People shied away from me. When I told the doc of my qualms about taking any kind of decongestant or antihistamine, he gave me samples. "These will not keep you up." Ha. He tried me on 3 more. The last one he guaranteed would knock me out. Not so. He finally gave me some kind of 'grainy' cough syrup. My ex-father-in law was a pharmacist and I know he was uncomfortable filling it and asked me if I knew how much this bottle was worth on the street. Whatever it was, it did the trick. Began with a P but I don,t remember what it was.
Well, I have 'talked' your head off, I don't have dry skin and I do happen to have Lucerin. Good lotion.
Thanks for listening. You're probably ready to go to sleep by now! Double-hug.

  • Vegas Dave
Vegas DavePA February 16 at 4:31

Actually, that was a really interesting story about the cough and cold since I have one right now. I would really like to know what the medicine that you took was. Since it was 30 years ago, I wonder if it now over the counter stuff. I also think it is really interesting how each of us has different reactions to the medicine that we use. I know lots of people who use Percodan and swear by it, but it did nothing for me. In contrast, I have been taking Loritab (generic) for over 10 years and it still works for me without having to increase the dosage.
