Hi I am a 43 year old back pain specialist. I can predict the weather and pressure changes better than any weatherman in town. I have been existing back pain since I injured myself on the job at the tender age of 22. Only one more year can I say I have been fighting this more than half of my life. I have had 2 surgeries, corisone injectios, nerve blocks, paralyzed fron the waist down for over a year, and been medicated/physical therapapied for 21 years. I am now experiencing some of the worst pain and discomfort in all my years. Granted I am not laying around taking care of only myself, I am on my second husband, 2 teenage children (a boy and a girl) 3 step children all grown and out of the house, haha (2 boys and a girl), work full time plus, and am the parent volunteer involved in everything the kids are. I am in Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Band Booster President at school, on the Athletic booster, PTO and parent congress. I am in viled with 3 Chamber of Commereces through work and have 3 droup meetings I attend regularly for my restaurant and go to Church.
I am writing beuse even though a new surgery was suggested - with a cage to stablize the base of the spine I m not ready to go there. It also is a workers comp injury so authorization takes awhile, My doctor in the mean time has said he will stop refilling all of my pain meds until I have surgery, The neurosurgeon would take over during and after surgery but what happens after the surgeon is done with me?? Can a doctore legally refuse to refill prescriptions that he has been prescribing for 5 years because he doesn't want to any more? Can he tell me I have to have surgery or he won't see me? He is my regular doctor as well. What do I do>

On probation for what! Is this guy for real? I think it is really unfair that they would put that on you. I don't think that there are many if any that are on this site that wouldn't do just about anything to be out of pain. I hate it when I hear something like this.

    Hi,
I just came over from the other site, diabetics, and this is just another of my ailments. I was reading your post, and I too am in a similar situation, I have been on pain meds, for 10 yrs. My dosage very rarely changes unless something else get injured or I have surgery on something else. My dosage has only increased 1 time a day, which when you look at it 4 times a day is really not a lot over a 10 year period. Anyway because I move a lot for my work, it is hard to find a Dr to write. I hope this is last move, I went to a Spine Ortho specialist to look at my lower back. He did an MRI, and I told him about some problems with my neck, and he got some xrays of my neck. Well something happened and I couldn't straighten my head up or else my left arm went numb and paralyzed pretty much. Three months conservative treatment and a nerve block all lead to C5- C6 fusion, you know plate and 4 screws. Not to mention my own hip bone piece. SO meantime my back is still messed up, and my Dr will not write for my back…I asked him when can we fuse my back, and he wanted to do more therapy for 3 months I had L5 - S1 microdisectomy surgery in 95 and now have L2 L3 with bulges, narrowing of my spinal canal, extensive scar tissue, and a bunch of other things, luckily my family internal medicine Dr agreed to write my prescription. SO I guess all that was to get to say was ask your family Dr. Does that help?

Hey, background is always good. It gives us an idea of where you are coming from. Those of us that have a good Pain doc feel lucky when we hear stories like yours. You are really lucky that your family doc will write your prescriptions for you. That is pretty rare.

I can tell you this much. Unfortunately, a doctor can refuse to treat anyone they don't want to treat. You could try to sue him, but what good would that do because in the meantime, you have no pain meds. I am not sure why your primary doc is so set on surgery. What does he say is the reason behind all this? I also know that primary docs do not want to prescribe pain meds on a long term on going basis. It makes them nervous. You might want to look at a pain management specialist. It is sometimes hard to get into one, but I would try and keep trying. Especially if you don't want to have more surgery at the moment. Honestly, if you are keeping up with all the things that you are doing right now, I would avoid surgery as well if you can. Find a pain management doc. They may try different things besides the medication, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I have been rejected from four pain centers. They say I have too much pain.

That is the craziest thing I have ever heard. What do they mean by that? Are you just in too much pain to help or that they don't know what to do.

YES, SOME PRIMARY DRS. WILL REFUSE TO FILL PAIN MEDS, BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS TRY A PAIN SPECIALIST OR A PAIN MEDICE DR. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE 2 PRACTICES. I THINK YOUR DR IS SEEING DOLLAR SIGNS ALL OVEER YOUR FACE. BACK SURGERIES COST ABOUT I/4 OF MILLION DOLLARS. WHILE SOME MEDICATIONS CAN JUST COST A FEW DOLLARS.

I think there is no doubt that there are docs out there that are all about the money. They might even be good surgeons, but I would steer clear of them if you can. Better to find someone who is understanding and is willing to treat you with respect and dignity and is willing to give you the help that you need to function in society and have a quality of life.
