In addition to an increased risk for developing heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, people who are overweight are more likely to experience back pain as a direct result of the excess weight. Being overweight will amplify the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, herniated discs, back muscle pain, sacroiliac pain, sciatica and spondyloisthesis.
Due to the increased weight that puts constant pressure on the spine, obesity causes and worsens back pain. How can weight loss reduce the likelihood of experiencing back pain?
Reduced Strain on Spinal Column
The framework of bones that extends from the neck to the pelvis is commonly known as the spine. The function of the spine is to transmit body weight in walking and standing. When too much weight is present, the spine is compromised, causing damage and pain. When an individual loses weight, the strain on the spinal column and back muscles is reduced.

Add your commentI think that is sound advice. Don't wait or the damage can be permanent. But even if you have some permanent damage it is still better to lose the extra pounds and take some of the pressure off your back. I know that the 20 pounds that I have lost in the last couple of months has made my pain much less. It is hard, but it is worth it.
I have lost 40 pounds in a couple years, and it has made some difference with my back as well as my knees. Unfortunaltely I waited much to ling to accomplish this and the damage is already done but, the weight loss does make a difference
This is a WARNInG from one of us supporting each other, "Do It Now", don,t let it go until you have destroyed some joints or bones. I didn't take heed and now I need a new knee and a new shoulder. Not looking forward to having either of these surgerys done, But i let it go until I am bone-on-bone. Not sure how long I will be able to put it off!
I have lost over 80 pounds this past year and it has helped my leg pains and "some" back pain.
Since I am on a diet right now, this strikes pretty close to home. I also read a couple of other articles on the site that were about nutrition and found them interesting. The web name cracked me up 3fatchicks is a classic.
